North Dakota Legislator Dies in Minnesota Plane Crash

A small aircraft caught fire and crashed in a Minnesota park Saturday morning, killing a North Dakota state representative and the pilot moments after takeoff.

Liz Conmy, a state representative from Fargo, was aboard the Beech F33A when it went down near Crystal airport north of Minneapolis. Brooklyn Park police responded to the crash report at 11:51am and found the burning wreckage in a park within the city limits.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed two people were on the plane. Brooklyn Park police inspector Matt Rabe said the aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff but declined to provide additional details about the circumstances or those aboard.

Conmy's death was confirmed by her colleague, state senator Tim Mathern, who spoke with the Star Tribune. The North Dakota Democratic-Nonpartisan League, a state party affiliate, announced her passing on social media, describing her as an advocate for public education, environmental protection, and government transparency.

"We are completely heartbroken and gutted by the loss of Representative Liz Conmy. Her death is a profound loss for our state," the party said in a statement posted to X.

The National Transportation Safety Board opened an investigation into the crash and said its investigators would arrive at the scene soon to begin their examination.
