Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, has been identified by law enforcement as the suspect arrested after an armed incident at the White House correspondents' dinner in Washington on Saturday night. Allen has no prior criminal record in Los Angeles County.
Video footage released on Truth Social showed a man sprinting through a Secret Service checkpoint near the main ballroom of the Washington Hilton, where the event took place. The footage captured officers drawing weapons and firing as he ran past the magnetometer screening area.
According to interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, law enforcement officers tackled the suspect to the ground. One officer was struck by gunfire while wearing a bulletproof vest but was released from the hospital by Sunday morning. The suspect was not hit during the exchange.
Carroll said investigators believe Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Officials also determined he was registered as a guest at the hotel.
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stated at a press conference that the suspect was in custody and authorities had found no evidence of additional individuals involved in the incident.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced Allen faces two initial counts and was scheduled for arraignment on Monday, with additional charges likely forthcoming. In a statement, Pirro said, "It is clear, based upon what we know so far, this individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could."
Authorities conducted a search of Allen's California home. No clear motive has been established for the incident at this point.
Author James Rodriguez: "An armed suspect breaching Secret Service at the nation's premier gathering of political press and power is a stark reminder that protection details at high-profile events face split-second decisions under fire."
