Trump Demands WHCD Reschedule After Security Breach

President Trump has called for the White House Correspondents Dinner to be rescheduled within the next month following a security incident that unfolded during Saturday's event, according to WHCA chair Weijia Jiang.

The dinner was disrupted when a suspected gunman attempted to breach security perimeter defenses. Secret Service personnel engaged and shot the suspect, federal law enforcement officials confirmed. The breach prompted immediate evacuation protocols, with Trump and attendees cleared from the building despite initial plans to continue the program.

Trump wanted to return to the stage after the evacuation, two sources told Axios, but law enforcement officials overruled the decision and required everyone to leave the premises. After roughly 30 minutes of uncertainty, Jiang first announced the program would resume, but law enforcement subsequently issued the order to clear the building entirely.

The president posted to Truth Social stating that the suspect had been apprehended and that he had recommended the dinner "LET THE SHOW GO ON," though he said he would follow law enforcement guidance. Jiang later confirmed that "everyone is safe" before announcing the evacuation order.

Word circulated within Trump's circle before law enforcement made its final decision that the president intended to return to the stage. One source close to Trump told Axios, "He's coming back. It's historic. It's so characteristic of the president and so uncharacteristic of the dinner, which is normally about civility." The source drew a parallel to then-U.K. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's decision to address the Conservative Party conference in 1984 after surviving an assassination attempt.

Trump was ultimately unable to make that return on Saturday, but Jiang confirmed plans for the president to attend a rescheduled dinner within the next month.

Author James Rodriguez: "The dinner's entire tradition rests on the implicit agreement that politicians and press share a night of ribald humor in the same room, and one gunman shattered that in seconds."
