Square Enix's massively multiplayer role-playing game is getting invaded by giant robots and existential dread. At this weekend's Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, director Naoki Yoshida unveiled a sprawling 24-player raid series called Ghosts of Desire that will transplant the Neon Genesis Evangelion universe directly into Eorzea's endgame content.
The crossover arrives as post-expansion material for FFXIV Evercold, launching in January 2027. Players can expect boss encounters and dungeon designs ripped from the anime's nightmarish aesthetic, all woven into the game's existing lore despite the seemingly impossible collision of universes.
This collaboration marks yet another high-profile creative pairing for FFXIV's raid teams. The MMORPG proved it could successfully integrate outside properties through the Shadowbringers raid series, which brought Yoko Taro's NieR Automata into the fold. That same Taro is now steering both the Evangelion crossover's composition and screenplay while simultaneously working on a new Evangelion anime series alongside Studio Khara under creator Hideaki Anno.
Alliance Raids, as the 24-player format is known, typically roll out in three installments across separate patches. If Ghosts of Desire follows that template, players should see content arrive in patches 8.1, 8.3, and 8.5, each bringing new story beats and encounters tied to the Evangelion property. The raid structure gives Square Enix room to develop a complete narrative arc within FFXIV's framework rather than simply dropping anime bosses into unrelated dungeons.
The announcement reflects a broader strategy by FFXIV to anchor major content to established intellectual properties that appeal to its player base. Previous collaborations have ranged from Final Fantasy properties to entirely separate franchises, suggesting the team has developed a reliable formula for making these crossovers feel organic to the game world.
Whether returning players will recognize Instrumentality when they see it, or if casual raiders are ready for AT Fields in a raid environment, remains to be seen. The full scope of how Evangelion's darker themes integrate into FFXIV's storytelling will become clearer as the patches release.
Author Emily Chen: "FFXIV keeps swinging for the fences with these collabs, and Evangelion might be its boldest move yet, assuming they can make Third Impact work in a raid dungeon."
