Dragon Quest Goes Smash Hit on Mobile with New Action Roguelite

The Dragon Quest franchise is marking 40 years with a bold departure from its turn-based roots. Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, a free-to-play action roguelite developed by Square Enix and KLabGames, just launched on iOS and Android, bringing the beloved series to mobile gamers in a wholly different form.

Yuji Horii, the franchise creator and game designer, emphasized the shift in a message accompanying the release. "It's a fun-filled game where smashing through hordes of monsters is incredibly satisfying," Horii said, adding that the intuitive gameplay is designed to welcome both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The game strips away the methodical turn-based combat that has defined the 11 mainline Dragon Quest titles and replaces it with real-time action built specifically for one-handed mobile play. You command a three-person squad through enemy-packed stages, with each run presenting new tactical decisions through a system called Blessings.

Blessings are temporary power-ups that reset between stages, constantly forcing you to adapt. One might extend your attack range to handle distant enemies, while another creates a protective halo that damages anything that gets too close. The game offers dozens of these modular bonuses, and their synergy with your chosen vocations and weapons shapes every run.

Character customization hinges on five classic vocations: Warrior, Mage, Priest, Martial Artist, and Thief. Each fills a traditional role, from tank to healer to damage dealer, but they're not locked into a single playstyle. Pairing them with different weapons unlocks special effects that chain with Blessings, letting you build everything from glass-cannon offense squads to support-heavy teams built around massive ultimate abilities.

Those ultimates, called Coup de GrĂ¢ce, trigger once a gauge fills from defeating enemies. They're weapon-dependent and wildly varied: one creates spreading waves of fire, another summons a tornado. Landing them at the right moment can turn a losing fight into victory, and the game marks each one with a SMASH animation.

The story mode takes place in Valdecia, a new setting for the franchise, and unfolds across multiple chapters containing 10 to 20 stages each. As you progress, you unlock additional game modes that offer different challenges and rewards.

The Gauntlet mode drops waves of enemies within a time limit, letting you chase high scores alone. Its seasonal cousin, also called Gauntlet, pits you against players worldwide on a global leaderboard across three progressively unlocked stages. Shrine mode delivers premium boss fights that demand Shrine Keys to access but reward powerful character upgrades called Monster Memories, which you can equip three of at once to customize your stats and abilities.

A launch celebration is running now with free rewards including 10 Premium Transmuter Vouchers for equipment acquisition, daily login bonuses, and missions that earn you Gems to spend on more Transmuters or Shrine Keys.
