SpaceX eyes AI coding startup Cursor in mega deal

SpaceX announced Tuesday it has reached agreement with Cursor, an artificial intelligence coding startup, in a transaction that could take the form of either an acquisition or a $10 billion investment.

The move reflects CEO Elon Musk's broader strategy to position SpaceX as a major player in artificial intelligence ahead of what could become the largest initial public offering in history.

Cursor has already secured more than $3 billion in funding and was actively seeking additional capital before this deal emerged. In February, SpaceX moved to absorb xAI, another Musk-controlled AI venture, in a transaction that valued the combined entity at $1.25 trillion.

The pattern suggests SpaceX intends to deploy substantial capital toward artificial intelligence capabilities before the company becomes subject to public market scrutiny. Whether structured as an acquisition or investment, the Cursor deal would represent a significant escalation in Musk's effort to weave AI development into SpaceX's core operations.

Author James Rodriguez: "Musk is betting hard that AI dominance will matter more than profitability when SpaceX heads to the public markets, and the market is about to find out if he's right."
