Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Democratic representative from Florida, announced her immediate resignation from Congress on Tuesday, stepping down just as a House ethics committee prepared to recommend disciplinary action against her.
The committee had determined that Cherfilus-McCormick violated ethics rules. Her departure preempted the panel's formal punishment recommendation, which was scheduled for that same day.
The resignation came months after a federal grand jury indicted her in November on charges of misusing more than $5 million in federal disaster funds. According to the indictment, she allegedly diverted the disaster relief money from her company directly into her 2021 congressional campaign.
