A Brazilian fitness influencer drowned during the swimming portion of an Ironman competition near Houston on Saturday morning, authorities said Monday.
Mara Flavia Souza Araujo, 38, was flagged as a missing swimmer around 7:30 a.m. at the Ironman Texas event in Lake Woodlands. Safety crews could not locate her immediately. Divers recovered her body roughly 90 minutes later in 10 feet of water, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Department confirmed her identity and cause of death. Preliminary investigations indicate Araujo drowned while competing in the swim leg of the event.
Araujo was no stranger to the grueling competition format. Since 2018, she had completed at least nine Ironman events and had amassed more than 60,000 followers on Instagram, where she regularly posted about fitness and life philosophy. Days before her death, she shared a Portuguese-language post urging followers to cherish the present moment: "Enjoy this ride on the bullet train that is life. And even with the speed of the machine blurring the landscape, look out the window, for at any moment, the train will drop you off at the eternal station."
The race organization released a statement Saturday expressing condolences to her family and friends and commending first responders for their assistance in the recovery effort.
