Crusader Kings 3 Lets You Play as the Pope in Massive New Expansion

Paradox Interactive is preparing to shake up its grand strategy franchise by introducing playable popes for the first time. The upcoming core expansion By God Alone will transform the Christian church into a fully interactive power structure, complete with papal authority and theological influence as legitimate strategic tools.

The expansion marks a turning point for Crusader Kings 3, which has dominated the strategy gaming landscape since its 2022 release. Players will now be able to assume control of theocracies and guide the papacy itself, opening entirely new avenues for conquest and diplomacy that previously weren't available.

According to lead designer Mikael Andersson, the expansion fundamentally reimagines how faith functions within the game. "By God Alone extends your options of how to engage with your Christian faith and the church behind it," Andersson explained. "It gives you more strategic options for how to deal with this institution, as well as dealing with other rulers of the same faith as you."

The mechanical overhaul runs deep. Paradox is revising how the church collects taxes, making temple holdings function more transparently and giving players direct influence over revenue streams. The team is also introducing rites, localized religious practices that mirror the actual theological divisions that fractured Christianity during the medieval period.

These changes aren't cosmetic window dressing. Andersson emphasized the goal is straightforward: "we're fleshing out the Christian church to make the institution itself feel like a living entity." That approach aligns with how Crusader Kings 3 treats every other power structure in the game, where characters, families, and factions all pursue their own agendas regardless of player intervention.

By God Alone is slated for release in the third quarter of this year as a paid expansion. Before that arrives, Paradox is rolling out a free update featuring age-related ailments for aging characters and a new story system tied directly to individual rulers.

The studio is also preparing a second core expansion called Silk and Silver, which will introduce medieval merchant gameplay. Players will establish trade networks, compete for market dominance, and navigate the complexities of commercial enterprise across historical regions.

Crusader Kings 3 has proven to be endlessly moddable and mechanically rich. Each major expansion adds layers of complexity that reward both casual experimentation and hardcore min-maxing. The ability to actually play as papal leadership represents one of the franchise's boldest design decisions yet.

Author Emily Chen: "Giving players the papacy as a legitimate win condition finally acknowledges what players have known for years: faith and religion are levers of power just as important as swords and gold."
