Five cities battle for Democrats' 2028 convention spotlight

The Democratic National Committee is launching an on-the-ground inspection tour this week to evaluate five finalist cities competing to host the party's 2028 convention. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia are in the running for what party officials view as a critical platform to build momentum for the presidential race.

The selection process is being overseen by DNC chair Ken Martin and Alex Hornbrook, the executive director of the 2024 convention. They will be joined by party leaders including DNC vice chair Malcolm Kenyatta, associate chair Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, and national finance chairs Chris Korge and Chris Lowe.

Behind the scenes, city delegations and their allies are already engaged in competitive positioning. Whisper campaigns are circulating criticisms of each finalist. Atlanta faces questions about union hotel availability. Chicago recently hosted the convention in 2024. Boston carries baggage as a symbol of coastal liberalism. Denver sits outside a swing state. Philadelphia remains tainted in Democratic memory as the host city for the disastrous 2016 convention, which preceded Hillary Clinton's election loss.

The stakes are tangible. Hosting the convention brings prestige and economic benefit from tens of thousands of visitors. Party leaders are watching which campaigns can assemble strong financial and logistical backing. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker played a decisive role in landing Chicago's 2024 convention by establishing a fundraising committee that pledged to cover all costs and leave the DNC debt-free. Similar financial commitments and operational capacity will factor heavily in the final decision.

Historical memory matters too. Many Democrats recall the 2008 Denver convention as a triumphant moment that preceded Barack Obama's victory. By contrast, Philadelphia 2016 is shadowed by the WikiLeaks email dump that exposed internal DNC favoritism toward Clinton over Bernie Sanders and by the shocking defeat that followed weeks later.

Basic logistics also weigh heavily on the selection committee's mind. Available hotel rooms, arena proximity, and transportation infrastructure are practical considerations that can determine a city's viability.

Republicans have already selected Houston for their 2028 convention, putting pressure on Democrats to finalize their choice and begin their own planning.

Author James Rodriguez: "The convention fight has become pure political theater, but money and logistics will decide it in the end."
