Charlie Cox Finally Boots Up Clair Obscur After Months of Dodging It

Charlie Cox has at last played Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, months after admitting he felt like a fraud every time fans praised his work in the game he'd never actually seen.

The Daredevil actor contributed only voice work to the action RPG, with a different performer handling motion capture for his character, Gustave. Cox recorded all his lines in roughly four hours, a reality that weighed on him when fans brought up the game.

Back in June, Cox confessed to feeling like a "total fraud" whenever someone mentioned his involvement. By July, when asked about the game, he revealed he hadn't played it yet and needed to purchase a console first. He recalled the recording sessions fondly, marveling at the visuals while noting that Mario 64 was probably his last gaming experience.

When The Game Awards 2025 nominated Cox for Best Performance in November, he made a point of crediting the real star behind Gustave: French motion capture actor Maxence Cazorla. Cox emphasized that nearly all of the character's physical performance came from Cazorla, with his voice being only one piece of the puzzle. The award ultimately went to fellow Clair Obscur cast member Jennifer English.

Speaking recently to GamesRadar+, Cox confirmed he's finally gotten some hands-on time with the game. "I've since played a bit of it," he said, though he stressed he hasn't finished it. He spent time exploring the opening sections, meeting characters, and gathering information, though he acknowledged his gameplay skills need work. "I'm not very good, because obviously, it's a skill set, but I've played it."

The voice acting gig has apparently opened doors for Cox in gaming. Last month, he revealed to YouTube channel Agents of Fandom that the Clair Obscur role, his first in video games, inspired him to take on another game project this year where he'll be "much more involved" in the production process.

Author Emily Chen: "Cox's journey from 'total fraud' to actually playing his own game is oddly relatable, though his willingness to pivot and double down on gaming work shows smart career instincts."
