The Dungeon Crawler Carl phenomenon keeps expanding. Renegade Game Studios launched a crowdfunding campaign for two new tabletop games based on Matt Dinniman's LitRPG series, and backers have already thrown $3.5 million at the project in its first day alone. The initial funding goal was just $250,000.
The campaign, running through May 15 on Backerkit, bundles two fully licensed titles set to launch simultaneously. First is the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG, a skill-based tabletop system set in the brutal, televised World Dungeon. The second offering is Dungeon Crawler Carl: Unstoppable, which applies the deckbuilding mechanics of Renegade's popular card game to the DCC universe.
Pledge tiers span from $1 to $900, with the premium option granting backers the chance to create a character for an official quest.
How the RPG Works
The RPG features a mechanics-heavy approach centered on player skills rather than character classes alone. The system offers 30+ playable races and a deep roster of classes and subclasses. The skill framework divides abilities into four categories: Attack Skills for weapon mastery and tactics; Spell Skills powered by mana; Utility Skills governing character interactions and crafting; and Passive Skills that remain constantly active.
Combat and skill resolution rely on the 20-sided die, but with a notable twist: only players roll. Game masters never touch the d20, keeping the tension and uncertainty entirely on the players' side of the screen.
The skill system itself has no hard limits. Players and GMs can design custom abilities to fit their playstyle, giving the game flexibility beyond the core ruleset. Renegade posted a full how-to-play guide on YouTube breaking down the mechanics in detail.
The campaign already reflects enormous appetite for Dungeon Crawler Carl content. The franchise is experiencing a rare convergence of media expansion: a television adaptation is in development, a toy line is launching, and now these tabletop games are arriving. Fulfillment for backers is scheduled for late October 2026.
