Cybercriminals who breached Rockstar Games have vowed to publish stolen company data online after the developer refused to meet their extortion demands, according to reports.
The hacking group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for compromising Rockstar's systems through Anodot, an AI analytics platform the studio uses for cloud-cost monitoring. The attackers posed as a legitimate internal service to gain access to Rockstar's Snowflake data warehouse, and initially set an April 14 deadline for payment with a stark warning: "pay or leak."
When Rockstar failed to comply, ShinyHunters told the BBC they would proceed with publishing the data as threatened. The group, described as a prolific gang of English-speaking cybercriminals believed to be teenagers, has previously targeted major corporations including Ticketmaster and has a track record of breaching cloud storage systems.
Rockstar's response to the breach played down its severity. A company spokesperson told IGN that only "a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed" and stated the incident "has no impact on our organization or our players." The developer did not confirm what data ShinyHunters obtained.
Law enforcement agencies globally advise against paying ransoms, noting that doing so funds cybercriminal operations and offers no guarantee that hackers will actually delete stolen information. The specific nature of what Rockstar's attackers now hold remains unclear, though if ShinyHunters follows through on the threat, those details could surface soon.
Rockstar has endured significant security breaches in recent years. In 2022, over 90 videos and images from an early build of GTA 6 were leaked online in what became one of gaming's most damaging security incidents. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the breach had upset the development team. Then last December, the first official GTA 6 trailer leaked on social media less than a day before its scheduled premiere, forcing Rockstar to release it ahead of schedule on YouTube.
Despite those earlier leaks, Zelnick later downplayed their impact, saying they ultimately did not harm the company. GTA 6 remains on track for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026.
