OpenAI Dumps Adult Content, Video Tool, Shopping Feature: All-In on Enterprise Money

OpenAI is making a sharp pivot away from consumer gadgets and risky experiments, shelving its planned erotic chatbot feature, shutting down Sora video generation, and scaling back its in-app shopping tool. The retreat signals a company racing to prove profitability as it faces intensifying competition from Anthropic and prepares for potential public markets scrutiny.

The erotica feature, announced last October by CEO Sam Altman, ran into significant technical obstacles during testing. The Financial Times reported the tool struggled to filter out references to bestiality and incest, effectively killing the project.

The moves came in rapid succession. Sora, which generated viral attention after launching in September, is now abandoned. Instant Checkout, the in-chat payment feature, is being wound down entirely. These decisions coincide with a strategic messaging push emphasizing business-focused AI rather than consumer entertainment.

For OpenAI, business customers represent a clearer revenue proposition. Companies want text generation and autonomous agents designed to boost workforce productivity, not chatbot amusement. That pragmatic calculation appears to be driving the company's ruthless pruning of experimental features that lacked obvious monetization paths.

OpenAI arrived at this moment with an ambitious but scattered portfolio. The company had pursued browser integration, music generation, wearable devices, smart speakers, and smart glasses. Many of those irons remain in the fire, but the focus is narrowing.

Adding pressure: Apple announced Thursday it would allow rival chatbots like Claude and Gemini to integrate with Siri on iPhones, reducing OpenAI's exclusive foothold in consumer devices.

ChatGPT still commands significant user volume with 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers. That installed base represents valuable real estate for conversion to enterprise customers and premium tiers, even if the base itself is temporarily de-prioritized.

On the same day Sora was killed, OpenAI published an updated Model Spec, a 100-page document governing ChatGPT's behavior. The filing notably repositioned the company's mission around democratizing AI access in health, science, education, and work. Consumer entertainment disappeared from the official narrative.

The company simultaneously announced a $110 billion investment commitment focused on expanding AI to
