Firefighters in Riverside County made significant progress Saturday against a fast-moving wildfire that scorched over 4,100 acres in less than 24 hours, nearly doubling containment efforts from the night before.
The Springs fire erupted Friday evening and raced across the landscape about 64 miles east of Los Angeles, driven by powerful winds that accelerated the blaze's spread. By Saturday, crews had brought containment to at least 45 percent, up from 25 percent late Friday, according to fire officials.
The rapid jump in containment reflected an intensive firefighting response, though the wind-driven conditions that fueled the initial outbreak remained a significant challenge to completely stopping the fire's advance.
