Neil Druckmann's Latest Comments Have Last of Us Fans Convinced Part 3 Is Coming

Neil Druckmann's throwback Instagram post about the origins of The Last of Us has ignited speculation among fans that a third installment is in development at Naughty Dog.

The creative director shared vintage sketches from 2003 that became the foundation for Joel and Ellie, the franchise's central characters. In his caption, Druckmann reflected on the project's evolution, writing: "Cleaning out the garage today and stumbled on my original sketches from 2003 for a game pitch about a man, his surrogate daughter, and a trek across a broken America."

What sent fans into overdrive was his closing line: "Grateful for every part of it, especially the few stops that remain on the road ahead."

The phrase "few stops that remain" became the focal point of intense fan interpretation across social media and Reddit, with many users reading it as confirmation that The Last of Us Part 3 exists somewhere in Naughty Dog's pipeline. One commenter declared the statement "pretty much confirms Part 3," while another capitalized on the word "few" to suggest Druckmann was deliberately hinting at multiple remaining projects in the franchise.

A Story That Isn't Finished

Druckmann's latest comments aren't his first hint about the franchise's future. In Naughty Dog's official documentary covering The Last of Us Part 2's development, he addressed the possibility more directly, stating that he believes there is "one more chapter to this story."

"I've been thinking about 'is there a concept there?' for a sequel, and for years I haven't been able to find that concept," Druckmann explained in that earlier interview. "But recently that's changed, and I don't have a story but I do have that concept that, to me, is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is it's own thing but yet has this throughline for all three."

He acknowledged that The Last of Us Part 2 could have served as a final chapter, adding: "If we never get to do it again, this is a fine ending point. Last bite of the apple, story's done." However, his discovery of a conceptual framework for a third game shifted his perspective on the franchise's potential longevity.

Druckmann has previously mentioned exploring a smaller story centered on the character Tommy, though he made clear that project was distinct from any potential full-scale third entry in the series.

The timeline for such a project remains uncertain. Druckmann is currently directing Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which Naughty Dog has positioned as the studio's most ambitious and expensive production to date. The game has no official release window, though reports from late 2024 indicated that developers were working mandatory overtime to complete an internal demo for Sony.

Additionally, Naughty Dog is working on another unannounced title directed by Shaun Escayg, known for helming Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. With both projects occupying significant development resources, a third Last of Us game would likely require years of additional work.

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us is currently in production on its third season, which is expected to be the show's final chapter. Druckmann, who was heavily involved in the early seasons, has stepped back from day-to-day oversight of the television project.

For now, fans are left parsing Druckmann's cryptic language for clues about what "stops" remain ahead. Whether the phrase refers specifically to The Last of Us or encompasses multiple unannounced projects from the studio, the creative director has succeeded in keeping the franchise's future alive in the minds of its dedicated audience.
