Mexican National Dies in ICE Custody at Southern California Detention Center

A Mexican immigrant has died at an immigration detention facility near Los Angeles, becoming at least the 14th person to die in ICE custody this year.

José Guadalupe Ramos was found unresponsive in his bunk at the Adelanto detention center on March 25. Staff immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR, before calling emergency services. Paramedics transported him to Victory Valley Global medical center in Victorville, where he was pronounced dead at 9:29 p.m.

ICE confirmed the death in a press release but did not disclose additional details about Ramos or the circumstances surrounding his death.

The death adds to a mounting toll of fatalities within immigration custody facilities nationwide. The count of 14 deaths this year underscores ongoing concerns about medical care and conditions at detention centers operated by or contracted through ICE.
